According to research by Smithers, global paperboard consumption is projected to reach 56.3 million tons in 2025, valued at USD 58.9 billion, of which 52.4 million tons will be converted into packaging materials worth USD 132.8 billion.
In its report “The Future of Folding Cartons to 2030”, Smithers forecasts that global demand for folding cartons will rise to 63.1 million tons by 2030, with a total market value of USD 159.6 billion at constant prices. The growing demand for paperboard and micro-flute packaging mainly comes from the global sustainability trend — as plastic packaging is gradually being replaced by paper-based alternatives, while emerging economies in Asia-Pacific and Africa continue to expand their consumption.
Smithers’ analysis shows that paperboard will gain market share from plastics in several applications, such as laminated and shrink films used in multipacks, trays for fresh produce, and food service packaging, as well as the development of all-paper blister packs for products like stationery.
The fastest-growing sectors include confectionery, frozen food, food service, soft drinks, and beer. Between 2025 and 2030, the healthcare sector will contribute the largest share of incremental demand, driven by new sales in developing regions of Asia and design innovation in mature markets.
Folding boxboard (FBB), coated recycled board (CRB), and white-lined chipboard (WLC) remain the top three grades in the folding carton industry, together accounting for 83.8% of current market demand.
From 2025 to 2030, as new papermaking capacity comes online in Brazil, China, and other parts of Asia, the share of folding boxboard in the market is expected to continue growing. At the same time, new capacity for solid bleached board (SBB) and solid unbleached sulfate board (SUS) will gradually enter production, supporting market expansion. However, solid unbleached board, uncoated recycled board, and lower-grade materials are expected to remain below the overall market growth average.
