Shanghai has demonstrated strong momentum and growing international influence in science communication, ranking sixth globally and second in Asia in a newly released index assessing the science communication capacity of global cities.
The index was unveiled at the 4th Shanghai Science Communication Conference held at Zhangjiang Science Hall on May 17. It was compiled by the Institute of Cultural Innovation and Youth Development at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The report offers a comprehensive evaluation of 40 representative cities worldwide in terms of their science communication capabilities.
According to the report, Shanghai has made significant strides in integrating science communication into its urban development through a series of policy initiatives in recent years.
Shanghai ranked first globally in offline public engagement, fourth in mainstream media science communication, and fifth in the influence of scientists as science communicators.
By supporting high-tech enterprises and research institutions, the city has actively promoted the wider application and public understanding of scientific achievements.
Over the past five years, Shanghai has accounted for 29.2 percent of China’s total publications in the world’s top three academic journals — Science, Nature, and Cell.
These academic accomplishments have been widely shared with the public through initiatives such as the Shanghai Science Festival, sparking growing interest in science among citizens and strengthening the city's soft power in science communication.
