Recently, IDC released its 2024 Q3 Global Printer Market Report, showing a 3.8% year-on-year growth in global printer shipments, reaching 20.3 million units. This marks the first increase after five consecutive quarters of decline.
Despite printer shipments in the U.S. and China declining by 2.0% and 8.8% respectively, other regions experienced growth due to improving economies and promotional campaigns. Global printer equipment shipments grew by 1.1%, generating revenue of $9.4 billion. Notably, printer shipments in the Asia-Pacific region surged 12.3%, reaching 3.7 million units, driven by positive economic outlooks.
1. Sluggish Demand for Wide-Format Digital Printers Amid Fierce Competition
The market for engineering plotters and digital photo advertising printers saw a decline in revenue. This was mainly due to the slowdown in the real estate industry, leading to reduced purchasing needs from architectural design firms and related sectors. Consequently, competition among equipment manufacturers has intensified.
2. Growing Demand for Digital Textile Printers Fueled by New Technologies
China’s digital textile printing products received international recognition during recent global events, driving growth in the domestic market. The increase in travel and tourism further boosted demand in this sector. The market for high-speed industrial digital textile printers saw significant year-on-year revenue growth, reflecting higher acceptance and recognition of such machines in the industry.
3. Digital Packaging and Label Printers on the Rise with Creative Designs
The Chinese market for digital packaging and label printing machines maintained steady growth during Q3 2024. Particularly, digital industrial label printers experienced faster growth due to their ability to handle multi-batch, small-order, and customized designs, attracting more equipment brands to enter the market.
In addition to traditional sectors such as fast-moving consumer goods, food services, and tourism, the rapid development of the cultural and creative industries has significantly influenced consumer purchasing decisions. Creative and unique packaging and label designs have become essential in attracting buyers, accelerating the demand for digital industrial packaging and label printing equipment.
Industry experts recommend that manufacturers stabilize their core markets while actively exploring new growth areas and responding to changing user needs. Increasing investment in R&D and innovation can enhance brand influence and expand market shares in the evolving industrial printing sector. This trend will be a central focus at APPPEXPO 2025, taking place from March 5-8, 2025, in Shanghai, where the latest technologies in digital printing, packaging, and creative label design will be showcased, offering industry professionals a unique opportunity to explore business expansion and market development.
